Of generation gaps and awkward conversations

Okay, this was actually supposed to be a part of the last entry, but sleep overcame me, so to speak, and i didn't get anywhere close to broaching the topic which i am about to, well, broach, now.

This entry is going to be about a highly interesting (highly interesting according to me, at least) conversation i had with my brother a while back. Before i proceed, a little bit of background info.

My brother is 13 years old (will turn 14 in july), is learning to play the drums, has an extremely high opinion of himself, listens to rock (thanks to me) and nu-metal (thanks to god knows who), is now taller than me, wants to grow his hair long and is a general nuisance and quite a smartass. Basically the usual teenage boy.

Coming to the actual conversation (keep the aforementioned things in mind while reading). A few months ago, i walked into the room where the computer's kept and saw him using it. I sat around waiting for him to finish whatever he was doing coz i needed to use it too.

Incidentally, in the past few months, we've started to get along pretty well and talk quite often. So generally we started talking, about this and that.

Then, in the middle of our conversation, he's like, "jeez, i'm so bored of porn man". Now i'm a pretty open-minded big sister (he'd showed me the finger at the dinner table when he was in the 4th grade and i hadn't said a word. My dad did ask him to NEVER do that rude gesture ever again....) and i know it's perfectly normal for boys his age (or any age for that matter) to watch porn, but i wasn't exactly prepared for the i'm-bored-of-porn bit.

But still, to keep the lines of communication open, and to be broadminded about the whole thing, i started telling him how it's completely normal for people to watch porn, and how everyone goes through this stage but how one should be careful to not let things out of hand (whatever that meant!!). He came back with a " i know didi, c'mon, i'm not a kid you know".

Feeling chastised, i decided to shut up and mind my own business when he asked me, "so you must've watched porn too right?". Now for the record, i HAVEN'T. The only thing that i've seen remotely related to anything like that was the dps video (which wasn't exactly a pleasant experience, honestly speaking). Anyway, after sitting with my mouth open for about ten seconds, i again told him the oh-everyone-goes-through-that-stage bit.

He wasn't very impressed with my answer but decided to let it pass (thank god!!). I was hoping that that would be the end of our little tete-a-tete but of course, it wasn't. He started telling me about how exactly he gets hold of the porn, when his friends started watching porn (either he didn't tell me when he started or my memory has sort of blocked it out), how it's no big deal (kid brother telling older sister porn is no big deal. What is the world coming to?) etc etc etc.

Before he could reach the inevitable, "didi where do babies come from?" (knowing fully well where exactly they came from and how exactly they come about. I know for a fact he's had 'that conversation' with an adult.), i decided to make my escape and sneaked out of the room when he got a little too engrossed in his Age Of Empires game (thank heaven's he wasn't watching porn in front of me!).

Now i've been dragged into a lot of amazingly uncomfortable conversations, but this one features amongst the top three.

Wonder if he's still bored of porn though........

ROFL! I started watching porn before I was 13 and judging from the fact that he gets bored I am presuming that he probably has been doing this for a long time. Hmmm, getting bored may also have meant not watching it for an hour daily though. LMAO!

Woops! I'm suddenly happy about the fact that I don't have a younger sibling. And I have to tell you that my elder brother had definitely never had such conversations with me (whether when I was 14 or when he was!). :D

Excellently written

Very humorous indeed (if that's what you intended to be)

Reminds me of a similar (uncomfortable) conversation I had with mom in Grade 7.

PS: She too new I watched porn :p

Lets see.... I got a net connection at home when I was 8, I think.... Gonna turn 20 in a few months.... So, I guess porn has gotten pretty boring now... ;)!!

Amazingly interesting conversation though... I didn't quite get the thing about the gen gap.... You mind setting me on the right track?? About the awkwardness.... I guess it might've been.... Never had that problem with my cousin sisters though....!

Infact, I have this lil cousin who's just turned 8, I think... She seems to be far more knowledgable on this subject than her elder brothers... It's amazing to see how well informed our siblings seem these days....!! It's very.... interesting..... to see her discuss Sexuality and Condoms at the dinner table!!

Kids these days!!!

well well well... hmm... you know the closest i came to discussing such things with my elder sister (who is like 8 yrs elder to me) was when i was having problems in some of the biology chapters in 7th.. my father looked a lil bit concerned, i felt, when he saw me discussing that stuff with my sis but contented himself with the knowledge that my sis was going nowhere out of the text-bookish language to explain those things to me ;p

really good work.. a sign of a seasoned blogger ;)

My god. That could not have been pretty. These are some of the reasons why I'm glad I don't have siblings. Although I still manage to have awkward conversations with people in general. There are plenty to go around.

and just like i promised, i comment the day i get back... you know..its very difficult commenting when 15 ppl already have. what new can i possibly say? of course, very intersting conversation but believe me, in this case its an exception. not all younger brothers would possibly be that open. i for one, never would have admitted it at 13! ok, i do have smnthng new to add. towards the end, do i actually detect embarrassment because you've never watched porn ;) and is that honestly true?

@ neo - that's because girls are lovely. boys are annoying!

@ aditya - well, i'm hoping not. i hope he said that just in passing. please god let that be it!

@ count sahaj - glad to have brightened up your day. :-D
dear god, 3-4 years??!! and yes, i wonder what problems god has with me....

@ richa - oh younger siblings are PESTS! and like i said, girls are wonderful, they don't drag people into awkward conversations.

@ utsav- thank you. and a similar conversation with your mum??? omg!

@ nefty - thank god he had that little bit of consideration for me. :-p

@ anunay- holy shit, 8????
also, that generation gap thing was supposed to be a joke. and my brother and i are pretty comfortable with each other, but these kind of conversations i'd rather not have, where he tells me about his porn-watching habits. :-p

@ sensations - oh yes, that'll make for a highly interesting entry. ;-)

@ devvrat - you bet, what is thew world coming to???

@ bored blogger - yes you my dear anisha have an extremely nice younger brother....

@ ady - thank you. and well, my brother is, for want of a better word, unique. :-p

@ puja - you are SO lucky. you don't need another person to add to all the awkwardness in the world.

@ sid - thank you thank you thank you. and coming to your question, yes, honestly, i've never watched porn. except this one time...actually i'd rather tell you in person, coz it's quite an embarrassing story. :-p

@ isha - thank you! and yes, be prepared, your brother might just decide to have a heart-to-heart conversation with you one of these days! ;-)

Hilarious post!!! I'm so glad I don't have siblings, especially younger bros.

Haha, still laughing over the "kid brother telling older sister porn is no big deal. What is the world coming to?" bit.
And the "one should be careful to not let things out of hand (whatever that meant!!)" bit... y'know even with parents, it's surprising how often they mouth things which don't quite fit into the context, don't quite make sense and which they don't even know why they said it. Sage advice givers are all the same :)
